Max's "Almost 1!" birthday bash was two weekends ago––though he may have officially been 11 months and 3 days, and unofficially one, he will always be my baby! At last minute our original plans to co-host a joint party with a good friend and her son of the same age fell through. Boo. But luckily for us, Chicago is never lacking in options. Yea!
After entertaining various ideas like hosting at a playroom or bake shop, and even our cramped condo, or setting up a picnic at the park across the street, I stumbled upon an awesome birthday alternative . . . the big top!
Or rather, the little big top under which the Chicago Park District sponsors Midnight Circus, a performing arts troupe of varied talents––actors and acrobats, aerialists and eccentrics, clowns and contortionists, singers, dancers, musicians/DJ, and a lone dog––benefiting the park district.
So, before we get on to the show highlights, here is a peek at the party details, which included a custom "Almost 1!" birthday tee (designed by moi and inspired by this!); kid-inspired foods (Rice Krispy treats, Outrageous Chocolate Chip Cookies, and everyone's fave, Pigs in a Blanket); and, while making a Whole Foods run for birthday cupcakes, this fun toddler apron in the kids section that says "The Strongest Man Alive!" (we've used a familiar catchphrase for Max ever since he was just a wee baby: "Strooongest babyyy in the wooorld!") I had to buy this, obviously.
Thanks to all our dear friends who could join us at last minute!

* Special thanks to my lil sis, who had spontaneously flown in to help celebrate . . . who listened to me freak out a little . . . who raced around with me to the neighborhood Dollar Store for supplies . . . baked batches of goodies . . . and who reminded me to put the birthday hat on the birthday boy during the show! Thanks, Auntie Jessi! *
