What I Wore: The Peninsula

Peninsula-12

The color red symbolizes prosperity in the Chinese culture––and I couldn't ask for a more appropriate opportunity to wear my Kay Unger dress and wedding pearls than to dinner at The Peninsula, a five-star global hotel brand originating from Hong Kong! And, it looks like I found a well-dressed friend here at The Peninsula Chicago :)

5th wedding anniversary at The Peninsula

Peninsula-4

Before we left for New York, we celebrated our fifth wedding anniversary at The Peninsula with dinner at The Lobby. Just like the Peninsula hotel brand is known for, the details (in and around the restaurant) were elegant, service impeccable, and the food delicious. With market-fresh menu options like lamb chops in a merlot reduction with fava beans, grilled flank steak with chimichurri and spring asparagus, side of lobster mashed potatoes, rhubarb crisp and popcorn ice cream (yes, popcorn!!) for dessert, how could you go wrong? Oh, and the duck flambé amuse bouche was the perfect, complimentary starter course. Next on my Chicago bucket list? Afternoon tea at The Peninsula!

{ Baby } OOTD: Surgeon by day, baby by night

BabySurgeon-6mo

I took Max to his 6-month wellness visit last week dressed in this baby surgeon outfit (last seen here at 3 months). I'm hysterical, I know. The nurses thought so, too. He got another round of vaccines––this time he only cried for a few seconds after the initial stick. We came home and I gave him a dose of baby acetaminophen to prevent any discomfort and fussiness. It must have worked because Max was really into playtime that day. It never occurred to me until now to surround him with pillows and just let him sit on his own on the floor, but look at how good his posture is! I bet he's been able to sit well without support for a few weeks now, but I just never encouraged it! Silly mama!

A Night to Remember.

I was randomly selected in a lottery to participate in an exclusive Ritual Soul Food Dinner last weekend as part of the ongoing exhibit, Feast: Radical Hospitality in Contemporary Art, by the Smart Museum at University of Chicago. As my anniversary gift to The Fella, I gave him my invite so that he could do something fun (not withstanding a little drive-by shooting!), different, and intellectual that was not science or medicine-related! Please enjoy The Fella's guest post about his experience that evening . . .

“These are our babies.” “These are our babies.” A neighborhood woman’s desperate entreaty sticks to me more than the pork ribs that would follow later that evening. You see, I haven’t felt much of anything lately other than extreme exhaustion with a side of fatigue. But this woman’s passionate plea is a call to action that cannot be ignored. Perhaps after having become a father myself recently, her message really hits home…

The evening begins with a bang, literally.

Shots ring out. A crimson rain. Dark faces gather. Sirens wail. Another victim. All too common on Dorchester, known to the locals as “The Strip.”

Who would have known that from such anguish would spring one of the most memorable nights of my entire life…

Enter Dorchester Project. Fueled by the visionary genius of a few dedicated souls. Especially, Theaster Gates, who dedicates his own time, money, and sweat to erecting beautiful havens within this downtrodden neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side.

As I stroll the halls of “The Project”, hidden treasures emerge at every corner. From the sea of salvaged art books that lines its wooden bookcases, to the engaging wall décor and ceramic installments of the artist in residence. Mesmerizing perfection.

Using repurposed materials, Theaster and colleagues have built several homes from the ground up on abandoned lots. One, the art house. Another, dedicated to music. A third, to the cinema. And, rest assured, there will be many more to come. Future project ideas include a soul food restaurant and music venue spearheaded by the celebrity chef of tonight’s event, Michael Kornick of MK Restaurant.

Sounds of sweet soul music swell the cool night air, corks pop, and tenderly cooked meat soaks in spicy BBQ sauce with a fixin’ of chitlins and butter beans. Spoken word poetry, a chorus of harmony, and sermons of unity and hope. Such culinary and cultural lavishness starkly contrasts the utter indigence of our neighbors.

Actors, TV producers, urban developers, doctors, lawyers, musicians, artists, museum curators, and area residents are among the assorted guests. Together, we pledge to act as agents of change. After all, these are our babies.

{ Baby } OOTD: Nekkid!

My favorite outfit on Baby Max is his birthday suit!

{ Video } Tummy time + 6 months update!

Baby Max had his 6-month wellness visit with the doctor yesterday. He now weighs 15lb 5oz (10 to 25th percentile) and is 27.5 in... that's in the 75 to 90th percentile!!! For having non-tall parents, this is both surprising and awesome! I'm signing him up for NBA! Our pediatrician still stresses the importance of baby tummy time to help work their core muscles. Tummy time can also consist of sitting up in "tripod stance" (where the baby holds themselves upright with their hands planted in front) and rolling around. Literally, like overnight this weekend, it seems that Baby Max decided he doesn't mind playing by himself for a long period (note that "long" in baby world means like 10 minutes).

{ at 6 months, April 15, 2012 }

Besides this, Max was also a perfect angel all weekend when The Fella was around, super smiley and happy. He's making me look bad in front of The Fella, who totally doesn't believe me whenever I say how hard it is that the baby always wants me to hold or interact with him, or how uncontrollably fussy he was the previous two days!

Max actually does okay now on tummy time, whereas even just two weeks before he would have been screaming like a banshee. See below.

And one final video, just for fun . . .  Happy Hump Day!

The weekend, succinctly

It was our fifth wedding anniversary on Saturday. We will formally celebrate the occasion with a fancy-pants dinner later this week at The Peninsula downtown using a gift certificate I won. This weekend we kept things low-key, and simply enjoyed our neighborhood with playtime both in the house and in the park, strolls through Wicker Park and Bucktown, and there was also time to enjoy a special anniversary pillow gift and a parmesan herb quiche at Lovely Bake Shop. I also picked up 12lbs of farm-raised beef (all organic, grass-fed, locally butchered) from a friend who brought it back from Missouri. What's for dinner? Beef, for the next few weeks!

Dear Ma-Ma

This last week has been very hard, learning that my 87 year old grandmother passed away.

She would have been 88 on May 5th.

I haven't nearly begun to process my grief; instead, have just been keeping busy with Mister Max to avoid it, I think. It's always such a hollow feeling you get in your stomach when you receive bad news. When my parents asked me to deliver the eulogy, bits of our childhood and time spent with her in New York City kept flittering by in my mind this weekend, wherever I was, whatever I was doing––both bittersweet and happy at the same time. Trying to memorialize 87 years of life is tough––how do you capture the essence of a person and celebrate one's entire life in a single speech? The strongest memories flash by when I'm outside taking a walk or sitting on the stoop. Perhaps Mother Nature's windy weather which is brewing out here is helping me to reconnect?

Made in France

Clemhiz-1

Look at what was waiting for us on the doorstep last week! This charming baby pillow came all the way from across the pond––Lyon, France to be exact! Clemence, who I've known for about seven years since she interned abroad at my company in Coral Gables, now has her own shop of personalized, handmade French creations, ranging from darling suede pouches to Anti-Valentine pencils. Once my shopping ban has been lifted, I will definitely be picking up one of these for myself! Baby Max has the most thoughtful family and friends who are always thinking of him! Don't you think his pillow looks just perfect in his nursery?

Playdate in the South Loop

Playdate_Nico-10
{ babies at 6 months }

Baby Max, meet Baby Nico. Nico is Max's first pal his own age in Chicago, born just about 2 weeks apart at the same hospital. His mom and I met at a prenatal yoga class when we were both around 30 weeks. Unfortunately we were too busy being tired and pregnant to really have the chance to hang out––like the time we were supposed to have dinner with the husbs one night but then she ended up going into labor instead! We're attempting to make up for lost time now. Our track record for getting together is not great, but the boys have sat on a couch or two together when they were 2 weeks, 4 months, and now 6 months. The thing about baby playdates is that, well, usually one (or both) is asleep. I guess playdates are really for the mommies, and that's pretty nice, too.

Playdate_Nico-8

I can't tell if they like each other. Look at their expressions in the pics above. Intense. You know what else I love? Nico's nursery. It's beyond amazing, especially the pops of red and that whimsical canopy, and it doesn't hurt to have views of Lake Michigan and Michigan Ave from the 62nd floor!

Mixing prints + spring florals

EasterSunday_Outfit

This season is all about mixing prints. Whereas before I would have paired this pretty floral blouse with a neutral bottom (see here), this weekend I decided to go wild and wear with printed yellow pants. Though fashion experts will say there are no rules when it comes to mixing prints, for those of you that are a bit more conservative, you can ease into this trend by mixing two prints that share at least one common color. Here, my yellow pants pick up on the shots of yellow flowers on the blouse. I like! :)

{ Baby } OOTD: Sporty neons

Neon is the trend this season, according to all the fashion weeks. I can see where designers got the inspiration from––baby stuff!

Easter pastels

Weekend040712b

A beautiful Easter weekend like this one calls for pastels and candy colors, like my favorite blouse from Topshop. Its multi-color beading and sequins make me seriously happy. Paired with floral tights from Spain and new open-toe leather wedges, I am ready for warm weather! And check out Max's Easter outfit, a darling blue and white sweater vest expertly knitted by Maya's mom! We brought Baby Max home from the hospital in this, actually. He fills it out much better now :)

The (holiday) weekend, succinctly

Spring came back just in time for Easter weekend with lots of bright sunshine and blue skies! Dressed appropriately in pastels, we toted Baby Max to a local toy store that hosted an Egg-stravaganza event with balloons, giveaways, and a random appearance by a Ms. Fisher the Cat. Who?? (I guess all the Easter bunnies were hired out for bigger shindigs!). The pretty day begged for a little stroll down busy Division Street and through Ukrainian Village neighborhood, lined with old, gingerbread-style homes and magnolia trees. We capped off Saturday with a vanilla shake at our favorite neighborhood joint, Oberweis!

{ Travel } Big Sky, Montana, part 6

This post, part 6, will conclude the last of the Montana trip updates (you're probably thinking, Thank god, why does she need to write six parts!) and will consist of what we wore in Big Sky (you're probably thinking, Outfit pics? Gee, no surprise!). As it was a hot chocolate-by-the-fireplace vacation, naturally only apres ski wear would be appropriate!

This was The Fella's uniform, along with the occasional cowboy hat (see last pic)––
BigSky_Outfit-2

This was mine, black riding pants, white knit scarf, and Hunter boots were
de rigueur, with a quick swap of a cozy knit sweater each day.

And aren't baby clothes just so darn cute?! Check out Max's Baby Patagonia vest, ski caps (thanks, Grandma!), and other mountain-inspired tees. So freaking cute, I can't stand it.
