Marketing genius at large

Here is a bucket list of responses that work for just about any time you are asked a question during a marketing meeting in which you really haven't been paying much attention. Note, I myself successfully used #s 2 AND 9 yesterday during a loooong brainstorm session about branding a new client who specializes in affordable senior-assisted living facilities (clearly a rather dry topic when a lovely, sunny day was admittedly captivating me through the conference room windows!):

1. "I'm really curious to know what YOU think." Act terribly interested in what the question-poser thinks.
2. "Leverage the [insert something generic that might remotely relate to the purpose of your meeting, like 'power of your brand']."
3. "I'll have to look into that and get back to you." It's always better if they think you just don't know, rather than that you weren't listening. AT ALL.
4. "Hm, interesting. (Long pause.)" Respond neutrally and wait long enough until someone else joins the conversation, giving you more information about the topic at hand to further elaborate.
5. "Impactful" OK, this isn't even a real word – but trust me – just plug it into virtually any sentence, and the marketing people will be blinded by your keen sense, direction, and intuition.
6. "Strategically, I agree." You'll never get in trouble for throwing around this 'S' word!
7. "Think outside the box, people." I know this is such a cliche, but it works like a charm in most scenarios related to marketing...
8. "Really?" You can never go wrong if you answer with a generic question.
9. "Good, fast, cheap! You pick two." Always deflect with a pithy joke said with just a touch of wry sarcasm in your tone and/or expression, particularly one that your boss has said before. (This just happened to work out quite well for me in our brainstorm about affordable senior-assisted living!)
