Blast from the past

I felt like I went through a hot tub time machine* when I set foot in Trader Todd's on Friday night

(Granted, that may be because I had just seen the movie the other night. Hysterical, by the way.) Back to Trader Todd's. It was a surprisingly comforting and familiar blast from the past, taking me back to the late 1990s/early 2000s, my formative years of high school and college, but set in Key West, Florida. Fake palm trees, neon lights, salmon pink, and old-school Florida paraphernalia threw up in the place, but reminded me of home in a good, cheesy way.

There was also passionately bad karaoke to Ace of Base's I Saw The Sign, Coolio's Gangsta's Paradise, Huey Lewis and Gwyneth Paltrow's Cruisin'. I almost swooned for my college days when a couple guys went onstage with Backstreet Boy's I Want it That Way. And, of course, oldies but goodies, like Young MC and Sir Mix-a-Lot!

{ my sweet ride! }
{ building, old Key West style }
{ an awesome night of bad karaoke }
{ "Busta Move" }
{ old school Bayview Park sign. It's real, The Fella once slept there. }

This night also took me back to more more recent times, just three years ago. It was surreal watching a group of first-year NMH interns crooning onstage, all so fresh and young, just getting to know their classmates over bad karaoke and beers. That was us, our group, exactly three years ago, on that stage bonding over karaoke, and boy, has life taken us on a journey since then. There are babies now and distance between us, careers and grown-up things alike.

WI Hot Tub Time Machine Trip*, here we come!

*The entire group of 12 + baby somehow managed to coordinate schedules and logistics to reunite for a weekend cabin trip in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin in the fall. Unlike the movie, I won't need a hot tub time machine. I only want to languish in the joy of being all together again and enjoy the present.
