When I first moved to Chicago three years, two months ago on a hot June day, I truly believed I could get away with wearing multiple layers of regular Florida-wear, to avoid buying expensive winter clothes. I had no idea that a knit-sweater-over-a-cardigan-over-a-turtleneck-over-a-fitted-tee was not only uncomfortable and unfashionable, but also NOT very warm, surprisingly. Or that the black, mid-length wool coat I bought wouldn't cut it. Or that the $19.99 polka dotted rain boots from Target would give way to hairline cracks along the cheap seams, unbeknownst to me, why my feet were always so frozen and damp while waiting at the bus stop!
Year two, I decided to get more functional because one season of crappy, non-qualified "winter" wear was enough. Florida tops and turtlenecks just cannot withstand Chicago winters. I bought a puffy down coat that reaches almost to my ankles. It's not exactly stylish, but, WHO THE HELL CARES. At least it has a belt to help cinch in the puff. I also splurged on knee-high, cheery, tomato red Hunter Wellies, made of industrial strength rubber!

Year three, I've really gotten into the fun of styling winter wear. Cashmere cardies, wool wraps, leather walking boots, that sort of thing. I finally (sorta) know how to layer without looking like a total Abominable Snowman. I brought home a lovely fawn-colored coat from my trip to Spain, pink Hunter fleece boot warmers to complement my red Wellies, and a few cute berets and caps. Even though I despise Chicago winters, with its harsh, cutting days and no foreseeable end in sight, wearing cute seasonal stuff helps make up for it a bit.
This year, I have my eye on stylish long gloves to tuck into my coat sleeves. And a really girlie, navy blue coat with three tiers and coat-of-arms buttons, well, I just couldn't resist this beauty.

And that's it, folks, for the Evolution of a Florida Girl's Winter Closet!
