Tales from the holiday tree...

A peak at some of my favorite ornaments from our ever-growing collection and the story behind each...

Our very first ornament, gifted from my sis-in-law. A twinkling little silver bell with "1st Christmas 2007" engraved on it, a symbol of new beginnings: first year of marriage, first year in Chicago, first winter, first dog together... and the more I write "first", the more weird the word looks, so I'll stop now.

A very true-to-my-life ornament from my college bestie. Oh, how well you know me, Martha! I love the wild crazy hair on this flying lady, the whimsicality in the little details like the coat hangers and tissue wrap. Martha gave it to me for Christmas one year, back in our days at the University of Miami. I think she found this at a boutique on South Beach, one of my fave places ever to hit the shops :)

Plump, darling felted sheep. Where's Little Bo Peep? We got him from Christkindl Market 2008. I've not-so-secretly named him Shawn Sheep in honor of The Fella, after the popular British tv kids' character "Shaun the Sheep", who I was first introduced to when The Fella handed down an old character tee. The shirt was a good-bye gift to him from his friends in England when he studied abroad years ago. I loved that soft shirt so much, I wore it to itty bitty pieces not caring that I looked like a homeless person. As a nickname for The Fella, Shawn Sheep just never really lifted off the ground. I wonder why.

FurFur ornament from Renegade Winter Craft Fair 2009. Okay, fine, so it's Bambi. My friends think I'm weird for thinking FurFur looks like a deer, but she does, and that's why I bought this. Can't you see it? No? Whatever. See if I care. I might even put a little wreath around her neck this year.

And my latest favorite, from Christkindl Market 2010... a duck that looks like Sebastian the Ibis (not a duck), my alma mater's mascot at the University of Miami! He's got a crazy feathered collar and a marching band-like headress. Just effin' awesome. So what if the green is a little more blue, making the colors look more Florida Gator than The U. Details, details.

What's on your tree?
